There are a number of rights and obligations that have to be observed by the Police. These are some of the more important rights that you have:-
• A right to remain silent
• A right to free legal advice throughout the period of your detention
• A right to communicate privately with your solicitor
• A right to inform someone of your whereabouts
• If you are a youth, the police also have a duty to contact the person responsible for your welfare
• A right to have your detention authorised and reviewed
• A right of information for the reason for your arrest
